This garden was just lawn with octagonal shed in right corner. The surrounds were two pebble dashed concrete walls left and right with angular timber fence bordering the back boundary. It was a relatively new build with compacted waterlogged lawn.
The clients required:
- Drainage and new instant roll out lawn
- Raised beds
- Koi carp waterfeature
- Low maintenance
- All year round interest
- Garden lighting
- Acrylic finish on raised bed walls
- Silver granite patio
- A WoW factor
- Wildlife friendly planting
The design I created covered all the above. It was an ambitious yet simple design and certainly provided the WoW factor. On presentation, the client loved it.
The design was based around semi circles, including: Raised semi circular silver granite patio, Raised semi circular themed raised beds capped with silver granite with lower ground bed, Semi-circular step in front of existing shed, Raised rectangular bed parallel with back boundary, 500mm deep central canal with custom sculpted granite rill within raised bed providing sound and aeration, Semi-circular pond 1.2M deep in front of raised rill, All utilities within pond to provide Koi with clean water/correct conditions, Garden lighting throughout and within waterfeature, New lawn with drainage system, Mowing edge around lawn using 200x100x50mm granite cobbles and 600x300mm granite slabs bordering waterfeature.
Planting included: 4 Sorbus ‘Autumn Spire’ in back bed and 2 groups of 3 Sorbus aucaparia in raised bed either side. The trees gave instant impact and were underplanted with low maintenance shrubs providing all year round interest, The lower ground bed was planted solely with Erica carnea. We included as many native plants for wildlife within this planting scheme.
