For this landscaping contract the client wanted to transform an unsightly mound of briars, old shrubs/perennials and weeds into a formal rectangular waterfeature. They wanted a feature that would WoW both day and night.
The design I came up with was a 12×1.4M raised waterfeature with 3 foam fountains to create ripples/sound and catch light at night.
I have built many waterfeatures over the years. The construction part is no problem for me but when it gets down to volumes, correct pumps, flow rates & filters I depend on Ray from N.J. Power, Blanchardstown. I give him the drawings, he provides the correct hardware to insure a crystal clear waterfeature free of algae and residue.
The design I came up with was a simple raised rectangle waterfeature. The raised part being capped silver granite kerbs and granite cobble mowing edge surrounded the feature for ease of maintenance.
I had the client in the diary for mid August, but I was delayed by a couple of weeks. We began in early September. Part of the detail Ray required was at least 600mm depth to achieve the correct volume of water. At 500mm we hit bedrock. Pneumatic hammers were brought on site to breakout the last 100mm. This cost us 4 days. The rest of the construction and preparation for tanking took another week. Just as we were about to complete the all important waterproofing, rain hit. It didn’t stop raining for a week. We returned after the rain to empty the feature only to find it was the water table that had the pond half full. I would have finished only for the 4 days lost on the damn bedrock.
It wasn’t until the following July that the watertable finally dropped and we could complete the waterfeature. The clients were pulling their hair out.
Anyway we finally got it finished. The clients were delighted to see the back of me, reminding that it was my fault as I had delayed starting by 2 weeks.
Waterfeatures are not for the faint hearted and this one certainly proved that.
Once the clients forgave me they posted a five star review 🙂
“A true professional in his work. Great care and attention taken in all details. Very helpful in suggestions as to what we should do.
I have no hesitation in recommending Kevin to all our friends”.
