Wisteria in flower

This client found us through the internet on Google. The site was situated in Knocklyon which was well within our range. After discussing suitable timelines we set up a date for suite survey and meeting.

On viewing the site, taking measurements, checking compass bearings and taking photos, the following points stood out:

  • Zero grass due to compaction, heavy traffic, possibly dog
  • Surrounds all over the place, no feeling of space due to eye being lead out into neighbouring spaces, differing heights and materials
  • Very large trampoline which would have to be worked around while building
  • Small area, made smaller by the new extension, clever use of space required
  • Bamboo hedge would have to go, not enough space, also would cause problems in future, through tillering
  • Synthetic grass, ideal solution
  • Fencing of perimeter, ideal solution
  • Low voltage garden lighting

On sitting down with the client, discussing requirements and expectations. Viewing the garden from the house both upstairs and downstairs and communicating my ideas we drew up the following brief:

  • Set budget, zero room for extras
  • Low maintenance
  • There was indeed a dog, synthetic grass a must
  • Good sized seating/barbecueing area, alcove for 9ft pre-fab chimnea (To be supplied by client)
  • Privacy, creation of outdoor room using fencing, happy to lose bamboos (They would destroy synthetic grass lawn anyway)
  • Budget won’t stretch to include garden lighting but installation of framework for when money becomes available
  • Will discuss with neighbours the fencing heights I have in mind
  • Allowance for a second paved area to accomodate a 6ft hardwood garden seat (to be supplied by client)

Armed with the above information I created a very simple but practical garden design. The design allowed for all the clients requirements and then some. It came in within budget chiefly because we made the seating area connecting the house to the garden as high as possible therefore eliminating expensive excavations for the sub-base required for the synthetic grass lawn. On presenting the design and quote, the client was happy to proceed. The materials I recommended were brush hanmmered silver granite slabs for paving and mowing edge detail surrounding the garden and giving definition. 1M Silver granite kerbs to be used like blocks capped with silver granite for raised bed. 30mm Delux synthetic grass for main lawn and trampoline area. Pressure treated Scandinavian Spruce 6″ boards laid vertically with capping and overhang. For such a small space painting would be required, I recommended Ronseal ‘Pebble’ timber paint.

The construction of the garden went very smoothly apart from some very inclement Irish weather. The following is the schedule of works carried out:

Work carried out

– Remove existing bamboo and cart to dump
– Supply and install patio using 600x300x30mm brush hammered silver granite slabs, include three 300mm AJ frames and one 600mm recessed Man hole (25Msq)
– Supply and install timber cladding using 6×1” pressure treated Scandinavian Spruce boards, capped with 2×1” latt (27Lm)
– Supply and install raised bed using 1000x200x100mm silver granite kerbs, capped with granite to a height of 45cm, fill bed with topsoil (6.1Lm)
– Supply and install synthetic grass lawn (40Msq)
