The brief from the client for this landscaping project was to create a low maintenance child friendly garden with entertainment areas, garden lighting, sunken area, all year round interest and utility lawn area. The garden design was broken up into 3 different areas. The first garden area included a raised Koi pond, Pergola and seating area, a softwood deck by the house a lawn and mowing edge defining beds. The beds were planted with 70% shrubs and 30% perennials to create colour and low maintenance. The beds were then finished with geo-textile matting covered with 75mm bark mulch.
The second area consisted of a raised bog bed, a circular gravel area with Indian sandstone stepping stones, lawn area and mowing edge defining the beds. The raised bog was created using railway sleepers. The bed was then lined with heavy duty polythene, which was then pierced many times with a fork. The bed was then filled with topsoil creating a bog bed which was suitable for moisture loving Gunnera manicata.
The third area in this garden design consisted of a sunken garden with circular patio, natural stone walling, garden shed, pergola and child friendly water feature. The water features were created using an old cattle trough, terracotta pipe, beach pebble, pump and reservoir. This area was planted with Silver birch, Dicksonia antartica specimens under planted with more ferns, Alchemilla mollis, heathers and small conifers creating a lush private atmosphere with the sound of water in the background. Outdoor lighting was also installed throughout this garden.
