For this landscaping contract the client required an entertainment area, play area, garden lighting and for the garden to be low maintenance and most importantly child friendly.
First, our landscapers re-arranged the existing deck into a more usable entertainment area. We then constructed a Cota brown limestone patio extending away from the deck. To create a room effect we installed raised beds around the entertainment area. For privacy we extended the height of the wall beside the deck using pressure treated native pine. The borders were then created using a path to one side and edging to the other. The edging system used was Edge pro which is a recycled plastic product that stops grass encroaching into the border areas. Within the borders we planted suitable trees, shrubs, perennials and climbers. To reduce maintenance the borders were then finished with Geo-textile matting covered with a 75mm layer of bark chippings. To the end of the garden our landscapers installed a play area using synthetic grass. The synthetic grass was laid on a 25mm layer of sand on top of a 75mm layer of compacted quarry screenings. The layer of sand provides a soft surface for playing on. Outdoor lighting was then installed for the children to play at night. The system used for the garden lighting was low voltage. The lamps were 50 Watt LEDs. LED lights are ideal due to their long life and low running costs.
